Pakistan established the first Internet exchange point (IXP) for all local Internet service providers that would help
reduce the latency of local traffic rates in the country with the largest deal.
Internet exchange points (IXP) is the physical infrastructure through which Internet service providers (ISPs)
and communications delivery networks (content delivery networks) exchange Internet traffic between their networks.
The main purpose of IXP is to allow networks to connect directly, through the exchange, rather than through a third party
and one or more networks.
Previously it has been routed Internet traffic through the Pakistani foreign Internet networks and exchanges,
even local traffic (with Pakistan). This will change now as it will allow local symmetry, which eventually led to the lower
voices and response times to local requests.
Under the chairmanship of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and in cooperation with the Internet Society (ISOC),
it has established distribution of these points at the headquarters of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
Syed Ismail Shah, president of the PTA, confirmed that the IXP is up and running for the past two weeks as a test.
Dr. Shah, who are officially said that the hardware setup and the exchange launched next month. President of the PTA
also said that more local Internet exchanges will be held in Lahore and Karachi soon.
The distribution point is one of the integral part of the communications policy which was implemented in 2015 is now a part.
It uses the Internet exchange point for the exchange of traffic on the local Internet with internally in the country between
Internet service providers, rather than appearance exchanges and international networks.
If the client uses a local Internet service if Send Ping to site / server that is hosted on Lintong, for example, you have been,
and are directing traffic through international exchanges located outside Pakistan. Now this movement is directed within
our local Internet exchange after its collection up.
Such online application, which is a local – and the distance between the client and the server can be a few kilometers –
to travel all the way to the exchange are hosted abroad and then will answer the local server after traveling thousands of kilometers, increased latency rates and lower data transfer rates.
This online exchange is going to help local hosting companies and data centers, service providers, banks, companies and
everyone that hosts sites / services with locally in Pakistan. It will also greatly benefit Internet Service Providers not only
enhance performance but also by reducing the bandwidth costs.
He said Ismail Shah PTA has been promoting new ideas and initiatives adopted to improve the telecommunications sector.
Preparation of the distribution point is one of this new initiative that will help improve internet access, business and local content environment.
